Résumé / Abstract
Exotic glasses and their applications This survey on non-conventional glasses will cover only chalcogen-based vitreous materials excluding fluoride glasses which have been recently reviewed here. Chalcogenide glasses appear as unrivalled materials for infrared applications as long as the relations between optical, thermo-mechanical and chemical compositions are controlled. As bulk glasses they open the way to the development of a new generation of moulded optics for IR cameras operating in the second atmospheric window from 8 to 12 μm. When shaped into optical fibers, these original waveguides can be used for low power CO
2 laser energy transport or for remote temperature measurements in guiding the IR light towards a detector. The most exciting results have been obtained by using these IR glass fibers for evanescent wave or ATR remote in situ spectroscopy in collecting the IR fingerprints of molecules which are involved in chemical processes such as fermentation or for metabolic imaging in biology.
